The Jordaan: Old Dutch
Rembrandt van Rijn used to live here, so as some famous Dutch singers, turning the Jordaan into a true Dutch working class neighborhood. An area full of tales from the past and songs from the heart.
The Jordaan is an unique neighbourhood, consisting of historic houses, small streets and was long ago one of the few districts that faced a decrease in its population because of poverty, overpopulation, and a lack of hygiene.
Nowadays the Jordaan is the popular area for ex-patriots, young professionals and well-paid artists and always nive to know that celebrities like Brad Pitt like this area so much that they bought an apartment here. It houses many small restaurants, bars and "bruine cafes", brown bars which derive their name from their brown, tobacco smoke stained interiors, such as t Smaaltje and de Pieper. Most amusement can be found at the 1e and 2e Egelantiersdwarsstraat / Tuindwarsstraat, Lindengracht, Westerstraat, Prinsengracht (in between the Noordermarkt and Westerstraat), Elandsgracht and around the Noordermarkt. On Wednesdays they have the well known Westermarkt, where you can buy antiques, music and much more.
The two churches that capture the Jordaan are the Noorderkerk and Westerkerk. Near the Westerkerk is as well the well known Anne Frank huis and Westertoren. It is a little difficult to get to this neighbourhood with the Dutch public transport, so rent a bike and explore your way around!
