Del Mar
Del Mar, much like La Jolla offers a rugged coastline, white sand beaches and great surf and swimming spots. Also like La Jolla Del Mar is a wealthy and exclusive destination offering a fine selection of restaurants, boutiques art galleries, and sea-view lodging. It is there that the similarities end and Del Mar stakes its claim as one of the top seaside villages on the west coast.
This community whose name literally means “of the sea” was founded as the railroad made its way down the coast in the 1880’s, over the ensuing years it became a destination for the rich and famous, with Hollywood celebrities including Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Jimmy Durante, Bing Crosby, making it their vacation home. It is home to the world renowned Del Mar Racetrack “where the turf meets the surf” which each year draws crowds to its summer meet.
The village of Del Mar combines Spanish revival, English Tudor, and modern coastal architecture. Walk it’s tree-lined streets and experience the great restaurants, bars, and merchant shops along Camino Del Mar and in the Del Mar Plaza, a wonderful shopping and entertainment center on a promontory overlooking the sea. During summer, Seagrove park offers visitors weekly concerts along the beach.
Del Mar offers something for everyone whatever time of year.
