The Pijp: the Quartier Latin of Amsterdam
The Pijp used to be a true Amsterdam working class neighborhood, but in the last few years it has changed into a trendy and expensive area where yuppies, D.I.N.K.s and students live.
The center of the Pijp is Ferdinand Bolstreet, lined with mostly retail chain outlets. It crosses with the pedestrian Albert Cuyp street, a famous outdoor market place consisting of more than 300 booths selling food, bags, telecom devices, flowers, clothes, anything possible. Nearby you will also find the Marie Heineken square and the 1e van Helstraat where young professionals and preppy students gather at night in one of the many small cozy bars and restaurants that the Pijp is famous for.
As for site seeing, behind the Marie Heinekenplein is the former Heineken now a museum with guided tours. Behind the Albert Cuypstreet is the Sarphati park, a nice city park with little bridges, fountains and waterfalls, which is especially a fun place to visit in the summer since it is used to lay down on the grass to get some sun or to picknick.
