Beejing Olympic Games have not finished yet, but US just have their hero: Michael Phelps. With his 8 gold medals in just one Olympic Games edition, he has become a legend.
This is the record track of this swimmer born in Baltimora in 1985:

400 individual medley
400 free relay
200 free
200 butterfly
800 free relay
200 individual medley
100 butterfly
400 medely relay

The previous recordman was Mark Spitz, who won seven gold medals in 1970. But Phelps has also to add four gold medals he won in 2004 at Athene's Olympic Games.
There are no recordmen like him in any other sports.
