With more than 100 different TV channels The US should have the biggest variety in comedy, sitcoms, movies, reality and talk shows. So, why is it that everybody is always complaining that there’s nothing on and is zapping from one old episode of Everybody loves Raymond to a rerun of Sex and the City where Carrie still had long wavy hair and waiting to meet Big? When watching Dutch television online, and looking at very provocative, daring and sometimes silly sitcoms and soap operas targeted to a very specific market, made me think that the US is also ready for a more open-minded way of broadcasting. Big Brother, Survivor and The Ten Biggest, all stemming from Western- Europe, were a great success simply because it was new, silly and confrontational. Tivo and Blockbuster has made American Television an activity you do alone, when you want to do it, instead of a nice, homely evening with your friends or family. So, maybe it’s time for The US to think inside the box again?
