In a nation where young women flaunt Louis bags and men obtain cutting edge technology, there is a silent population struggling to survive. Japan's burgeoning class is growing in number daily. This class earns less than $19,610 a year and thier numbers top 10 million. These individuals skip meals to save money, live in crowded apartments with shared bathrooms and kitchens.
The working poor have not seen growth in such numbers since Japan surged to wealth in the 1980s. It has been a shock to a country that once prided itself on being a pillar of economic equality. Some blame the growth upon the sinking economy which laid off workers, these corporations were replaced by temporary agencies who do not offer benefits, proper compensation, and unload workers at will.
The future appears bleak for this burgeoning class. Without proper employment regulations, health care, and government assistance Japan's working class will only sink deeper into poverty.
