The first hotel chain aimed at extreme sports enthusiasts have launched with the opening of the first Extreme Hotel here in Cape Town. The 130-room Extreme hotel in Cape Town's city centre boasts stunning views of Table Mountain and features a five-storey climbing wall on the exterior of the Extreme hotel.
The hotel's swimming pool is designed to look like an aquarium: The swimming pool is adjacent to the 30mm thick glass windows of the Extreme hotel's restaurant, giving diners an underwater view of swimmers. This to say the least provides quite a show to those imbibing at the bar as chisled athletic bods bobb by.
The men's urinals appear to be suspended on scaffolding at the edge of the building while the inside of the hotel's elevator simulates being inside a shark cage (thanks to life-size floor-to-ceiling photography).
The Extreme hotels are the brainchild of Al Gosling - extreme sports lover and founder of The Extreme Sports Channel - and will be managed by South African hotel firm, Protea. Gosling and Protea have secured $200 million in initial funding for the project from hotel investment firm, Istithmar Hotels. For an extreme taste of the Mother City, this is a winner.
