Instead of exchanging playful stories of how fun their weekend was, Mexican children were talking about how many dead bodies they saw. Twelve dead bodies were found outside a Tijuana school. "They chopped out their tounges." said a small school boy, more fasinated than shocked. All of this violence is the result of the drug war thats continuing to be battled across the U.S. border. Since September 29th there have been at least 99 deaths in Tijuana alone. However this drug war stretches all across Mexico, where there have been numerous bodies severed and decapitated. All of this violence is beginning to be an everyday sight for these school children and classes are being cancelled daily to try and keep children from these gruesome sights. These drug lords are fighting for attention. Placing the bodies in very public places and in front of schools to get a rise from the government. There is no doubt that these sightings are taking a toll on the young children. These acts are becoming so frequent that they're loosing their shock value and even the morges are beginning to overflow. The names of the drug cartel leaders are mentioned in popular songs and portray them as heros. The police are doing everything in their power to bring down these drug trafficers but often find that they are better armed and extremely difficult to control. The killers are showing off their killings in wildly perverse ways and bodies could be turing up at any moment. Young children are jumping at every little noise because of the common gun shots. The kids are beginning to associate anyone in uniform with violence. The children see the police and are afraid theres going to more shooting. Its impossible to keep the children from all of this violence, parents can turn of their TV but the children are witnessing these attacks first hand. With the increasing corruption of the Mexican police, people are wondering how this problem will ever be solved.
What a tragic situation and one that is so perverse in that the drug lords are targeting youth, the least able to cope. The fact of the matter is that with greater non-drug economics, industry, and trade in legal goods, all hope that the drug lords drift away into history.
