During Dmitri Medvedev’s 85 min. long state of the union address last Thursday, he proposed that the Russian constitution to lengthen the presidential term from four to six years. This sounds odd to most because this proposal comes just six months into his first term.
This has caused a huge amount of speculation and rumors. It has been said that Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has the real power in the Kremlin and has Medvedev laying the groundwork for him to assume the role as president again.
The conspiracy un-veiled by a respected daily financial newspaper, reported that Mr. Putin intentionally placed Mr. Medvedev in the presidency “to carry out the necessary constitutional changes and unpopular reforms for Putin to then return to the Kremlin for longer.” The newspaper theorized that Mr. Medvedev would resign and call for a presidential election in 2009.
