Holland is generally known and considers itself as socially tolerant and environmentally conscious. The Netherlands even has an official Parliamentary Party for Animals and 30% of the Dutch use Green Energy. There is a trend towards “green roofs” seen in the US, but originating in many sub-arctic countries like Norway where homes often include grass covered roofs.
“Green roofs” is the process of covering the roof of a building with vegetation. Aside from fulfilling the need for a garden with grass and flowers, they also reduce or insulate against heat, cold, rain water, filter pollution, and increase wildlife habitat area. To me, it just adds to the beauty and color of often times grey cities. If we already have fake beaches in the city (Amsterdam, Rotterdam), then why not lay on a grass field on top of your house.
Ford Motor Company in Michigan, Chicago’s City Hall and the Gap headquarters in San Bruno are example companies with green roofs that are beautiful and care for the environment. If Holland following this trend, I guess Philips, Heineken and KLM must be next to plant this seed in their “caps.”
