Mexico's president, Felipe Calderón, has said that in order to fight this war on drugs, the U.S. has to work on it problem with drug addiction. The U.S. is the largest consumer of illicit drugs and that we were the main supplier of weapons to the cartels. Since Colombia suppressed their cartel in 1990, Mexico's cartels took over most of the trafficking. The U.S. has previously helped them by lending money in order to strengthen their numbers of law enforcement officers, but Mexico is now hoping that with Obama their will be more emphasis on the addiction and health problem. Obama needs to meet with the Latin American leaders to present a common front on the war. "The war of drugs is also a war on addiction."
