While on a recent visit to Holland, and outside of Amsterdam, I visited a newly opened McDonalds with a group of friends. I was surprised at first by the caliber of cars in the parking lot, Mercedes, BMW’s and Range Rovers as opposed to Chrysler Minivans and Toyota Tercels in the typical US McD’s. Next, I was surprised at the high quality, modern, and pleasant interior that would match any mid-priced chain restaurant in the states. There were stylish banquettes, modern booths, and bar-type seating rivaling the trendiest of bars. Seated amongst the plush backdrop of this upscale McDonalds were well-dressed, well-heeled customers, couples, and families celebrating a sit-down meal “American” style. The menu is more limited than that stateside and of course included a regional specialty, the McCroket (Croquette) sandwich. Of course another difference I found was that you have to pay for sauces like Ketchup and Mayonnaise, and to visit the bathroom (WC)! Anyway, I opted for a traditional Big Mac, or perhaps Le Big Mac against this somewhat fancy McDonalds that is truly more like a restaurant than I am accustomed to … perhaps it’s time to revamp McDonalds shops stateside?
