The culture of the Greek upcoming 30year old professional
15 April 2009
athens, Spotted by Ermina
Overall rating:
The typical first car of the upcoming Greek professional is a Golf car in dark blue or black color with beige leather seats or the Audi A3. Most of the 28+ young professionals after receiving their first bonus will spend it in bying this car which will probably keep for about 4-5 years until they can afford the upscale jeep or trendy convertible. So if you happen to meet a Greek banker or professional working for a big multinational firm chances are he/she will take you on a ride with the Golf/ A3, and the driver will certainly be wearing sunglasses even with the slightest sunbeam....

Two amazing reports!!! Thank you very much for your clear insights on certain types of Greeks, not only interesting to read, but as well two very entertaining writing styles!! Thanks once again!

Adding to this Greek Cultural trend, the typical Greek “up-and-coming” female exec which respects herself (not to venture as far as to say EVERY greek female with some sort of income) owns at least one authentic Luis Vuitton hand-bag, one or two fake LV bags, more than one pair of designer shoes (i.e. Gucci, Prada, Manolo Blahnik’s, or Jimmy Choo’s) and,as mentioned in the original report, almost definitely drive a Volkswagen Golf, an Audi A3 or a Peugeot 206 convertible! They ALL own an expensive Rolex, Bulgari or Chanel wristwatch and top off their appearance with a Burberry’s scarf (not the inconspicuous ones, but the one’s with the characteristic design and logo!). A summer weekend is almost always spent in Myconos island, whereas a typical winter getaway is a weekend ski trip to Arachova, whether they ski or not!
In addition to the above, these ladies have made it their obligation to visit their beautician once a week for a manicure, pedicure, waxing, facial or some other pampering which they simply cannot live without! The not so occasional visit to the hairdresser’s goes without saying as does coffee in Kolonaki, Glyfada or Kifisia, irrespectively if they live miles away from any of these places!
All of these “luxuries” of course are not paid for by their meagre salaries alone, but are subsidised by Mom and Dad, whom they still live with till they’re happily married, at which point their own salary is spent entirely on themselves (once again) since husband number one (or two, or three) covers all other household costs! At this point their monthly income has increased, so they can now afford to carry ONLY authentic LV bags and other aforementioned accessories.
This leads to a horde of identical look-alikes, without any individuality and a blood-lust to outperform other women in all lifestyle respects! I must admit that Greek women are looking much better than they did 10 years ago, but it doesn’t really come from their extravagance, but probably from their innate good taste, since there are many exceptions to the rule of the woman desribed above. Such women look just great, while shopping most of their wardrobe from cheaper stores such as Zara!!! (let me stress that this applies to the one’s that have good taste).
In other words, each and every Greek (man or woman) who is in a position to do so is trying desperately to live the American Dream, whether they can afford it or not!!! They then experience the same American Nightmare when they realise the emptiness of all their endeavours, not to mention the dilemma characteristic of women who get caught up in wanting to reconcile the traditional expectations they have been raised to believe in and the unattainable expectations they have set upon themselves by watching too many American movies and trying too hard to bring to real life the values and experiences of a “Sex and the City” lifestyle!
This might sound a bit unsympathetic, but it’s more or less realistic. I’m sure this is true of most cultures around the globe, but I can only talk about the one I’m living in!
The most imortant thing however is that, even beneath all these designer labels, people in Greece have managed to preserve a sense of what really matters and transcend these superficial necessities when they need to and can enjoy a good time by sharing as traditional a thing as a cheap souvlaki with good friends and a beer bought from the kiosk down the road!
That which sets the Greek apart from other cultures is that for their friends, he or she will without a second thought take off their Burberry scarf to tie their wounds or dry their tears and will gladly lend their friends their expensive hand-bag, wrist-watch or over-priced car just to see a smile on their face.
