The now defunct (bought out by USAir) Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) was an early example of a brilliant buzz marketer among airlines.
PSA's stewardesses were legendary, and were a major part of the airline's success. Word was so widespread about the California beauties that a squadron in Vietnam named themselves after Judy Bailey... a legendary PSA stewardess spokesperson who told millions through TV adverts "come fly me."
PSA, seizing the opportunity, sent her to Vietnam to meet her squadron, in her celery-green uniform. Girls flocked to PSA to be a stewardess, with the average employment only being 9 months.
1969 continued their growth and unique marketing. Over at Sea World, PSA sponsored the construction of the new Skytower, rising 320 feet into the air (costing nearly $530,000.) Profits and image continued to rise.
PSA continued their marketing with style well through the 1970's but as the industry and lifestyle changed so to did their ability to use such techniques decrease and along with it traffic and profits. In a way, today's Southwest have replaced them as a brilliant marketer among airlines.
