It's often said that Johannesburg is the Los Angeles of Africa (minus the ocean) and if that's the case than the Westcliff is South Africa's Beverly Hills Hotel (minus Warren Beatty). The smartest city hotel, it's located on a tree-covered hill overlooking wealthy Westcliff, and is a hot favourite with Jo'burg's political and financial elite, among them Nelson Mandela.

Unlike its namesake in the Beverly Hills Hotel though, the Polo Lounge here is done on a colonial safari theme, with gorgeous views of the city to soak up as you soak in their cocktails. Bar staff specialise in daiquiris and martinis and if you listen carefully you can hear the lions roar in the Jo'burg zoo below.
