As a car aficionado, I am always seeing out the new and innovative, however, I must admit that style, speed and handling are more important to me than economy and environmental consciousness. Yet, I love the new, and of the many cars that I have owned I was among the first to take delivery of a first generation Toyota Prius.
Though fuel efficient, economical and dependable, the Prius lack of style and performance left me yearning for my BMW. Named after Serbian born inventor, Nicola Tesla, referred to as the patron saint of electricity. Tesla was fired by Thomas Edison who eschewed his AC (alternating current) system in the late 1800’s. He was then hired by Westinghouse to developed AC motors that powered many of the first automobiles.
Today Tesla is a nearly perfect, albeit pricey 100% electric car. Tesla combines performance (0-60mph in under 4 seconds), efficiency (135 mpg equivalent), and longevity (220 miles per charge) at a cost of less than 2 cents per mile, all in a stylish and sexy package that is more Lotus than Prius. 2009 will usher in the Tesla Roadster priced at just under $100,000, to be followed later by a more reasonably priced (under $40,000) four-door sedan. Plug it in and turn others on!
