Italian Comfort Food (Buonissimo 2 Cucina Italiana)
This fan of all things Italian attended the "soft opening" of a new concept in Italian dining in San Diego and I am in love!
As i spent two years of my life in Italy and travel there frequently, I am in a constant search for little bits of Italian style and culture wherever I can find them. Well, I am happy to say that not only is Buonissimo 2 authentic, it is like stepping back to a more simple and pure time in Italy... think Cinema Paradiso meets La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful), in fact, were Roberto Benigni in San Diego, I am sure you would see him dine here.
As Americans seek out nostalgia to escape the current global and domeestic woes, war, recession and H1N1, thank goodness there are some escapes like Buonissimo 2! Located in San Diego trend setting and diverse Hillcrest neighborhood, Buonissimo 2 welcomes you through an Italianesque market facade to the first of three zones, a market feel replete with an eye poppinng variety of Italian "antichita'" including vintage pay phones, typerwriters, pasta press, radios, and far more all from Italy! The second "intermezzo" zone is one in which you are meant to feel at home, complete with the compulsory vintage black and white Italian television set playing vintage Italian movies. Finally, there is the "giardino" a garden dining area that welcomes you with randomly selected tables and chairs, giving the feeling of a backyard supper, the only dllemna is which area to dine in...!
As far as the dining experience, I samples a number of appetizers, all deliciously fresh and clearly homemade, their bread and pasta, gnocchi, tagliatelle, pappardelle, linguine, tortelloni and ravioli are homemade on premise. In addition to the regular menu, their special menu features a variety of rustic soups, antipasti, pastas, and main courses.
Give this a trry, you will be in amore!

Hey Brian, thanks for the message, my boyfriend and I have been back (several times) I should have updated my comments, we are addicted, the food (save for a couple of times which is normal hit or miss on occasion anywhere) is wonderful, authentic and service has been very good. In fact we are heading there this Sunday so I may do an update report.

I just went back last week and I must say the food and experience were wonderful! I recommend you try if you have not, and return if you have not been back for a while. SocialButerfly, have you been back lately? What do you think?

Well, I have to agree, though the food is truly hit or miss the gnocchi alla gorgonzola I had were the best I have ever eaten, my friends stew was just tasteless and the meat was tough, I found service to be great and loved the decor.

Stravinsky... I could not agree more the place is a wonde3r in terms of decor but the food and service fall short, now that they are open I am less enthusiastic, I hope food and service quality improve! Agreed!

It seemed to me they paid too much attn to detail in decor etc than in the dishes they served. See my yelp http://www.yelp.com/biz/buonissimo-2-san-diego#hrid:55hOHmNT3C2mAWC8yGGF1w/src:self
