Perhaps not new to the world, but definitely worth mentioning – especially since it was the first time I heard about it:
Oxford Circus – the intersection between Regents street and Oxford street in London-, has since this month a diagonally pedestrian crossing intersection, which is modeled on the famous scramble crossing in Shibuya station in central Tokyo. When all traffic lights turn red for vehicles, pedestrians get 30 seconds to make the 25-metre diagonal crossing, enabling them to move faster around the famous Oxford Circus.
Supposedly traffic will flow more smoothly (pedestrians will no longer try to jump the light), and shoppers and tourists will reach their destination more quickly.
X marks the spot!
