Is it a Smart Choice (Smart)
The Smart Car has been a smash hit in the European market since its introdcution, yet here in America where bigger nearly always means better, how is Smart, a micro car, to fair?
I have had the opportunity to test out the Smart for our own StyleXplorers as a Smart Style Patrol, a vehicle to rove the tawny shopping streets, and other places where the innovative and trend setting meet. As a car afficianado and marketing professional I summerize here some of my thoughts on this compact cruiser.
First what I have learned to love... dispelling some of the myths that I had previously bought into. ONE - This car is big! (inside), I am 6'2" / 1.84m and I find it one of the most roomy front passenger compartments that I have ever encountered. TWO - This car is easy to get in and out of! the higher stance of the seating area and wide door entry make it a pleasure to get in and out of. THREE - This car drives and feels very safe! In spite of the continuing supremacy of the SUV in the US, this car's high stance, solid build and top IIHS saftey rating make it very safe. FOUR - This the easiest car I have ever driven, from turning to parking, this is by far the simplest car that I have ever driven. FIVE - This car is fun! I have the convertible version which operates brilliantly, with the push of a button, even outside the car, the top disappears effortlessly. SIX - The high stance of the driving position affords the driver and passenger a nearly SUV like view of the road and makes you feel quite safe and in control. SEVEN - This car does offer enough storage for groceries to golf clubs, they fit in the rear storage area that features a hatch that is perfect for tailgate parties!
Now for my only criticism, I drive manual cars and find myself yearning for a manual transmission in this car! While the clutchless automatic is convenient, I found it annoying in up-shifting, so fortunately there is the option of paddle shift. My only other gripe is fuel economy which is outstanding but could be better, give us a hybrid or electric Smart and we are in business!
In summation, I am sold on this magical micro, it is practical as a sole car for the urban dwelling single or "DINKs" (dual income no kids), it is likewise great for the empty nesters as a second car for weekend shopping and adventures, finally, it is a great choiCe for commuters it is simply perfect for congested roads, city streets, and parking is a breeze. In my opinion, Smart is Stylish and sensible transport for the 21st century.

It would be a great second/ third car... Especially for in town errands and dragging the MOBE around!

I have the Smart as a second car here in South Africa, I totally agree with your report, an electric model would be fantastic. I use my for beach jaunts, have a rack for my windsurfer!
