In today's Wall Street Journal, an article revealed that candy companies such as Mars Inc., Jelly Belly Candy Co., and Hershey Co., are beginning to sell caffeine spiked candy. And we thought that the sugar effect was bad enough. Now it's sugar and caffeine.
The new trend is an attempt to increase candy sales and to target an older audience. Awareness of obesity and diabetes in kids is becoming more prevalent, resulting in loss of revenue. However, candy companies observed that while candy sales went down, energy drink sales increased rapidly.
Will this new trend stick? With the amount of workaholics increasing daily in the United States, the candy market has the opportunity to compete within the caffeine world, providing something sweet, solid, and energizing.
