As New York's urban and youthful society settles in for this second recessionary retreat in winter, there is a warm, inviting and casual escape for social escapades and dandy fine eats... this place is the Roebling Tea Room. This tea room and restaurant located in a rustic urban relic of an old wharehouse is one of the pulse points of the modern urbanoid.
The high-ceilinged room has a definite social club feel to it with its creamy wainscoting, low lighting, and small tables clustered around a central bar. By day, the neighborhood city journalists populate with their laptops. By night, Gen Yers and Xers engage in lively banter as they consume old-fashioned comfort food.
People-watching is an indoor sport here it is definately a scene to be seen in. The food is uniquely comfortable and creative ... including the tangy, crispy macaroni and cheese (add the optional bacon). The traditional and vegetarian bratwursts are accompanied by crisp and delicious sauerkraut. A must try is the corn on the cob, it is popped in the fryer for a few minutes then tossed with foie gras butter and topped with chives, sea salt and sliced cornichons (tart pickles made from tiny gherkin cucumbers typically served woth pate).
Sample the namesake teas with dozens of brews including mate, greens and British blacks.
