Conceived by the architect Baron Haussmann in the late 19th century to replace a former quarry, the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is a romantic baroque -style park with dramatic manmade bluffs, waterfalls and rolling green hills that provide a rare natural escape to Parisians.
The Buttes-Chaumont is not on the usual tourist circuit and is a great place to explore if you want to see where the locals go to get away from the grind. The park includes several cliffs and bridges, a grotto enclosing a 20-meters high waterfall, a lake and several English and Chinese gardens.
