Most Germans traditionally don't celebrate Valentine's Day, although it's becoming more popular to exchange gifts.
Valentine’s Day is not as seriously observed as it is in the States; as a matter of fact, the celebration of Valentine’s Day has gained popularity only in recent decades, namely after the end of World War II. While it was previously celebrated by some, the end of the war, and with it the friendly relationship with American soldiers, added to the growing esteem Germans were developing for this holiday.
Valentine`s day it is a strictly mature subject in Germany. No cute little heart shaped cards being given between kids at school. As in all other countries celebrating it, you will find in my home country stores with a full range of romantic gifts and cards and chocolates specifically made for Valentine's Day. All in pink and red, of course!
Another important item of Valentine's Day in Germany is the big ginger cookies, made in the shape of a heart and decorated with frosting. They usually have a few words written on them such as: meine Schatzi, Ich liebe dich, (honey/sweety I love you).
