A Not So Joyful Division (Joy Division)
Thirty years since the tragic death of Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis. After meeting his childhood friends Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook at a Sex Pistols concert, the three formed Joy Division a band that pioneered Britain’s post-punk scene. Curtis became its brightest star until his suicide at just 23 years of age.
Curtis's short life inspired many biographies and even several films, the most recent being the 2007 movie 'Control' starring Sam Riley and Samantha Morton, who played his wife Deborah.
Ian Curtis killed himself after struggling with combining his professional and home lives, the strain of suffering from epilepsy and the added complication of falling for another woman.
It is amazing to many, myself included, that with only 4 years together and 2 studio albums produced, Joy Division remain a powerful influence in music today and their sound is as fresh and relevant as ever.
