Art Without Borders (Einar & Jamex de la Torre)
My recent visit to the ART SAN DIEGO 2010 event introduced me to a number of artists who I will not follow, and as in the case of brothers Einar and Jaimex de la Torre dream of one day having one or more of their works.
Border art eminated in the late 1980's, around the time that the de la Torre brothers began working with glass and mixed-media including detail in paint, found objects, and lighting. The de la Torre's are artists whose work plays on physical and cultural divides, physical as in the US & Mexico, and cultural as the divide between history and present, art and religion, leaders and may I say loosers.
Mixing mythology, Catholic religious symbolism and political commentary with every day elements such as coca cola bottles and punch bowls, the de la Torre brothers create icons that provide dazzling and multilayered pieces of art that are full of fantasy, whimsy and yet are hauntingly tragic and forboding, much like the religious art of the Middle Ages, much of a pictoral warning and lesson to avoid sin.
Their scuplpted glass and multi-media wall art provide glimpses into the tarnished pride, lost heritage, and declining society around them. The brothers work and live between Ensenada, Mexico and San Diego California, their art as they themselves transcends borders.
