Fish farmers in Scotland killing estimated 2,000 seals a year
Major retailers and animal welfare groups are trying to stop the salmon industry from killing the seals. The reason for the killing of seals is that they are causing many problems for fish farms such as damaging nets and releasing salmon. Since fish farmers have not found any effective solution for this, shooting seals seem to be the cheapest way for their salmon industry.
However, there are controversial arguments on the number of seals being killed. The salmon industry announced 489 seals were killed in 2008 and totally 2000 to 2,500 seals are being shot each year.
Some alternative non-lethal methods have been conducted to deter seals from harming the salmon such as tougher nets, tensionsing and acoustic devices. However, as killing salmon is still legal, it is not easy to make the industry use these expensive non-lethal measures.
