Ever since Japanese cartoons, which are called “MANGA” and video games have dominated in its industry nationwide, some trends create other unique social phenomenon and affect in other counties as well. Here are instances that probably you might know how MANGA and video games’ characters are used in ways other than their originally intended objectives; making movies based on their characters or stories, dressing up in the characters outfits for enjoyment (this is called costume-play), or communicating with other people in a virtual world while pretending to be their favorite character through embedded video game’s internet function. However, the latest phenomenon is remarkable because it doesn’t exist only the virtual world since a couple of years. Yes, these characters came into the real world, and became a maid to make their fan to be happy. Their main territory is in Akihabara, which is well-known for being the electronic products shopping area. They usually work for a specific coffee shop, “maid café” as a waitress wearing kind of lolita-style costume. Their services are also unusual and diversified, such as sitting table with customers (their fans), eating together, chatting, or singing like one would on a normal date at a karaoke bar. Whenever these maids to do something to promote theirselves, they get media’s attention to exposure as if they are real. Please don’t forget to buy some kinds of souvenirs, which printed them when you come to Akihabara, Tokyo.
