There's no competition. Gelato wins hands down. Ok, I'm Italian, probably my opinion isn't completely impartial.
Where can you go if you want to enjoy gelato in a sunny and warm day here in San Diego? One name: Pappalecco, on State at Cedar. You'll find the best gelato in town.
You'll also find an informal and relaxing atmosphere, Francesco (the owner) welcoming you, an italian staff (be careful, one girl is French, don't be too confident approaching everybody in Italian!), one of the best pistacchio in the world, some Italian-Soprano customers, my girlfriends and I at a table in “Sex&The City – San Diego”.

I'll have to try it. I LOVE gelato (much more than ice cream) and the atmosphere sounds great! Thanks for the report and suggestion.
