Take the exuberance and prosperity of the 1980's, mix it with pent up poverty and the remaining urban blight and decay of the 1970's. New York's East Village and the streets of this concrete jungle provided the initial backdrop an canvass for Haring's work, graffiti artist were making their mark throughout the city, and cities around the world.
As opposed to todays graffiti artists, who leave their name in a bid for recognition, these artists had social messages, rather than individualistic, these artists used public and urban spaces as opportunities to converse with the public.
Keith Harings imagery took on the quality and strength of words and language, just as the cave dwellings of old, his art reflected life with it's ups and downs, triumphs and tribulations. Those who influenced this brilliant life cut all too short (he died in 1990 at the age of 31) included Andy Warhol & Christos.
